Mannheim (ots) A 35-year-old man threatened to kill himself on the street in the Neckarstadt district on Sunday afternoon. Shortly after 12 p.m., passers-by reported to the police a conspicuous person who would riot in front of a property on Gärtnerstrasse. When several police patrols arrived, the man was already holding a knife to his neck and threatening to kill himself if police officers approached him. The area was cordoned off by numerous police patrols. However, the man could not be persuaded by communication to take the knife from his neck and put it on the ground. The man was finally overpowered and arrested shortly after 3 p.m. by officials from the special task force who had been notified in the meantime. He was initially taken to a hospital for treatment of a small self-inflicted cut on his neck. Since he was apparently in an exceptional psychological situation, he will then be presented to the doctors of a specialist clinic, where his further treatment will take place. According to the current state of knowledge, no uninvolved persons were endangered. Investigations into the background to the incident are ongoing
