The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class - the privacy function of the front passenger screen

Quelle: AUTOMOTOTV (Glomex)

In Europe and in more and more countries, the front passenger can watch dynamic content such as TV or video streaming on the display while driving. The prerequisite for this is protection of the driver from distraction. The camera-based system in the E-Class uses an advanced locking concept that is even more intelligent than the previous solution. The driver can no longer recognize the content on the screen. This has been confirmed by extensive tests on test subjects. In addition, the authorities in the EU, the U.S., China, Norway, the U.K. and Switzerland allow free audio enjoyment for dynamic content with this system. Pairing headphones is not mandatory there. The concept works in two stages: First, seat occupancy detection registers whether someone has taken a seat next to the driver. If this is the case, the touch interface of the display can be used via MBUX from the front passenger seat while driving. If, on the other hand, the front passenger seat is not occupied, the screen becomes a digital decorative image. The customer can choose from a variety of motifs. These include, for example, a starry sky, i.e. the Mercedes-Benz pattern. The Dual Light Control technology (DLC) of the front passenger display reduces the risk of dynamic content such as movies being seen peripherally by the person behind the wheel. This privacy function developed by Mercedes-Benz can be switched. Based on the content, the system can therefore switch the visibility for the driver on or off.
