Shortly before the upcoming model update of the Clio, Renault looks back on the more than three decades of history of the compact model. A success story in pictures, before the current fifth generation rolls out in spring, thoroughly updated and even more attractive. The Renault Clio has been an unbroken success since its market launch in 1990: with 16 million units sold worldwide in 120 countries, it is the best-selling French automobile of all time. Lined up end to end, all the units together would circle the earth 1.6 times - or, stacked on top of each other, would be 75,000 times taller than the Eiffel Tower. The successor to the Renault 5 took the concept of the compact city car to a new level: for example, the Clio combined excellent driving characteristics and lavish equipment with solid quality at an extremely competitive price. "It's not expensive enough, son," was accordingly one of the advertising messages. The compact model impressed not only customers worldwide, but also proven automotive experts: Twice in the past, the international jury of experts voted the Clio Car of the Year in Europe. Today, the Clio is still one of the most sought-after models in the Renault portfolio: At the plants in Bursa, Turkey, and Novo Mesto, Slovenia, more than 1,400 vehicles of the model roll off the production line every day.
