The new Mercedes-Benz CLA - CLA hybrid models can drive purely electrically and recuperate

The motor and transmission design is very compact thanks to the small cylinder spacing and the so-called side-by-side arrangement of the electric machine: electric motor, inverter, and transmission form a highly integrated unit. A newly developed 48-volt battery with lithium-ion technology offers an energy content of up to 1.3 kWh. Once again, the design is particularly compact: the battery cells and the DC/DC converter are integrated in the so-called flatpack. The electric motor intelligently supports throughout the entire speed range. Especially at low speeds of the combustion engine, acceleration is significantly improved. With the hybrid models, it is possible to drive purely electrically at urban speeds and when less than 20 kW are needed. The so-called electric sailing, i.e., efficient coasting with the drive train decoupled, is possible up to a speed of around 100 km/h. The special feature: the motor can recuperate in all eight gears, i.e., recover up to 25 kW of energy. Because the torques of the combustion engine and the electric motor add up, the maximum torque is displayed over a wide speed range. In addition, the combustion engine can be started completely via the electric machine and clutch. A conventional pinion starter is no longer required. Particularly comfortable: the start-stop function and the switch between the two engines engage almost imperceptibly for the driver.
