Galeria Kaufhof: Hope for a Future of the Department Store

The department store chain Galeria has achieved an important financing step: A loan of around 160 million euros from the investor Gordon Brothers temporarily secures the business operations. At the same time, the money is tied to a three-year restructuring plan. The company intends to comprehensively review its store network, renegotiate lease agreements, and assess economically weak locations. Around 30 of the 83 department stores are considered at risk. Possible closures are also being considered, while potential reopenings are being evaluated at individual locations. There is cautious optimism for the Nuremberg location, but a final decision is still pending.
