In an airplane, some seats are safer than others and can make the crucial difference in case of an accident. When booking a seat on an airplane, we often only think about comfort and speed when exiting. However, the most popular seats in the front rows and aisle have been found to be the least safe in case of an accident. According to a study conducted by Time and numerous other researchers, the rear middle seats actually have the highest chances of survival. The study used airplanes that crashed between 1985 and 2000 and created statistics on where the survivors of the accident were seated. Despite being the least popular, the middle seats provide a cushioning effect given by the two side seats, while the rear of the airplane is more likely to remain intact than the front. Additionally, the rear rows are farthest from the fuel tanks that can catch fire and are closest to the emergency exits. According to a study by the University of Greenwich in 2008, you even have a greater chance of surviving an accident if you sit at the emergency exits, as you can exit the airplane the fastest.
