Prolonged daily sitting can have negative effects on both physical and mental well-being and often leads to the feeling of needing to make up for it in leisure time. Thirty to forty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day can offset up to ten hours of sitting, according to a meta-analysis. The analysts based their study on nine previous studies involving over 44,000 individuals in four different countries who wore fitness trackers. As a result of their study, the analysts found that the risk of death in individuals with a more sedentary lifestyle decreases with increasing time spent in moderate to vigorous activity. The study found that even standing can be beneficial, but it is recommended to break a good sweat for about half an hour to make a difference. Activities like cycling and brisk walking can reduce the risk of premature death to the level one would have if they had not been sitting. The World Health Organization recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week to counteract sedentary habits.
