Doctors often warn against processed foods, excessive sugar consumption, and saturated fats. These foods can increase the risk of chronic diseases, including neurological problems such as stroke and dementia. Neurologist Dr. Baibing Chen said he avoids four specific foods that many people may not realize can seriously impair brain health. Additionally, certain lesser-known foods can also pose serious risks to brain health. Damaged cans that are swollen, cracked, or dented may contain botulinum toxin, a potent neurotoxin that can lead to paralysis and respiratory failure. The toxin is odorless and tasteless, and heating may not render it harmless. Large tropical reef fish like barracudas, groupers, and amberjacks may contain a toxin called ciguatoxin. This heat-stable toxin can cause symptoms such as tingling, dizziness, or vivid nightmares. Cooking does not neutralize the risk. Undercooked pork may contain pig tapeworm eggs, leading to neurocysticercosis, a brain infection that causes seizures, brain cysts, and dementia-like symptoms. It is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide, even in industrialized countries. Unpasteurized milk is another risky food known to harbor bacteria like listeria, E. coli, and salmonella. These pathogens can cause severe neurological damage, especially in children, pregnant women, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Despite health claims, raw milk is far riskier than pasteurized milk. Awareness of these foods and their avoidance contributes to protecting brain health.
