Remove Faded Flowers of These Plants in August to Extend Their Blooming Period

Quelle: VIDEOELEPHANT (Glomex)

August marks the end of summer, but gardening continues. Here are the plants whose faded flowers you should remove this month if you desire a longer blooming period. Marigolds bloom continuously when you remove the faded flowers. Trim tired plants by one-third and lightly fertilize them. Zinnias thrive when you remove faded flowers above the leaf nodes. Trim long stems back and fertilize them with a bloom booster to get more flowers. Petunias in containers benefit from pruning. Water them generously after removing faded flowers and lightly mulch to stimulate new growth. Remove faded sage flowers by cutting them above the green leaves under the wilted flower heads. Trim tall plants back and fertilize them generously. Geraniums become leggy in August. Trim the flower stems to the base, remove yellow leaves, and fertilize every two weeks. Coneflowers need some trimming, but leave some seed heads for pollinators and winter decoration. Roses still need pruning in August, simply cut them above the outward-facing leaves. Improve air circulation and water early to avoid black spots.
