New research has shown that listening to cheerful or soothing music can help people recover better from motion sickness. Motion sickness occurs when the body, eyes, and inner ear send conflicting signals to the brain, leading to nausea and dizziness, especially during car rides. Chinese researchers used a driving simulator to induce motion sickness and then tested how different types of music affected recovery. Cheerful and gentle music helped the most, reducing symptoms by over 56%. However, sad music was less effective than silence without music. The researchers believe that gentle music releases tension, while cheerful music can activate the reward system and distract from the discomfort. In contrast, sad music can intensify negative feelings and worsen physical symptoms. They believe that music provides a drug-free, cost-effective way to alleviate motion sickness, with fewer side effects than medications.
