How to Tell If You're Not Washing Your Hair Often Enough

Skipping hair washes may seem tempting, but too long between washes can cause a range of issues. Every scalp produces sebum, and as Dr. Hadley King explains, "Oils can accumulate, make the hair look greasy, and even cause unpleasant odors." In addition to greasy hair, inadequate washing can make the scalp itchy and cause inflammation. "Sebum provides a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, and yeasts to thrive, leading to scalp irritations," says Jodi LeGerfo. These buildups can also lead to dandruff. Moreover, inadequate washing can worsen existing scalp problems. Residues from shampoos, conditioners, and styling products can make the hair sticky or weigh it down, explains star stylist TerraRose Puncerelli. Infrequent washing can even contribute to hair loss and breakage. Additionally, hair can appear flat and lifeless due to residues and oils. According to Dr. King, a 2021 study found that less frequent washing "was associated with an increased risk of hair loss." Washing hair too infrequently can cause unpleasant odors and create a general feeling of uncleanliness. This can affect both one's well-being and how others perceive them.
