Should You Mow Your Lawn One Last Time Before Winter?

Most lawn experts suggest that taller grass stays healthier - but as winter approaches, many wonder if the final cut should be shorter or if the grass should be left longer. Professionals recommend mowing the lawn slightly higher (around 7-8 cm) and cutting only one-third of the blade length each time to promote healthy growth. Keep mowing until grass growth completely stops in late autumn. In cooler regions, growth can surprisingly continue for a long time - sometimes even into December. Regular mowing promotes a dense, healthy lawn and ensures an even surface. Skipping mowing in late autumn can lead to an uneven lawn and make it harder to maintain in the next spring. For the final cut, slightly shorter grass is recommended to prevent snow mold and keep the lawn tidy - especially in snowy areas. However, cutting too short can damage the roots, especially in warmer regions where different grass species grow and snow mold is less of a concern. Avoid mowing and walking on the lawn after frost or when the ground is frozen to prevent permanent damage and plant loss.
