Climate change makes floods and heavy rain in southern Germany more likely

Quelle: NBR (Glomex)

The probability of heavy rainfall like at the end of May and beginning of June 2024 in southern Germany has already increased significantly as a result of the climate crisis. Instead of occurring approximately every 42 years as in the past, such rainfall events are currently expected about every 30 years in the region, according to a study by the Regional Climate Office Potsdam of the German Weather Service (DWD). With a global future two degrees warmer, it is expected that similar events in the area will occur on average every 23 to 25 years. Record rainfall in 2024 led to extensive flooding in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
