Why Urine Doesn't Help with Jellyfish Stings

Quelle: VIDEOELEPHANT (Glomex)

Many people still believe that urine helps with jellyfish stings, but studies show that it neither relieves the pain nor neutralizes the venom. Experts say that vinegar is the most effective immediate measure as it neutralizes the stinging cells and prevents further venom release. If vinegar is not available, experts recommend rinsing with seawater as freshwater can trigger the release of secretions from the remaining stinging cells. Seawater keeps the microscopic capsules inactive, reducing the likelihood of absorbing more venom after leaving the water. Experts advise removing tentacles with tweezers or the edge of a card and avoiding direct contact that could trigger more stings. Acting quickly is important as pain can intensify within seconds, and early measures help limit further reactions. Watch for spreading swelling, breathing problems, or dizziness, as these symptoms require immediate medical attention.
