Protein has long dominated wellness trends, but "Fibermaxxing," focusing on maximizing fiber intake, is gaining popularity online. "It's great that people are paying more attention to their fiber intake because it's really important for our gut health," says Janice Dada, MPH, RDN. Fiber not only supports digestion but also helps control blood sugar, regulate weight, lower cholesterol, strengthen the immune system, prevent inflammation, and improve cognitive performance. It can also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers. Fibermaxxing, inspired by Gen Z slang for "maximize," means eating as much fiber as possible. TikTok creators promote fiber-rich staple foods, from chia seeds and black beans to raspberries and "Poop Bread," claiming that these foods have contributed to regular bowel movements. "Gut health has become an important concern for many people because they know they can influence it through their diet," says Dr. Federica Amati, PhD, MPH, MSc. Those who have tried Fibermaxxing report a balanced hormone system, more energy, better skin, and improved weight management. However, too much fiber can cause bloating, fullness, constipation, and reduced nutrient absorption – especially if you don't drink enough water. Experts recommend prioritizing fiber from whole foods over supplements but emphasize that "fiber should be a priority all year round and not just a viral trend."
