Trend towards declining asylum applications in Germany since the beginning of 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, Germany recorded a significant decline in newly submitted asylum applications compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, a total of 65,419 first-time applications were submitted from January to March. This corresponds to a decrease of 19.2 percent compared to the first quarter of 2023. In the first quarter of 2024, most asylum applications, almost 20,000, came from Syrian citizens, as reported by the Federal Office. Afghanistan with 10,198 and Turkey with 10,119 followed in second place. A total of 80,651 initial and subsequent applications from asylum seekers were decided in the first quarter. Less than half of these, namely 46.1 percent, were granted protection status. Since the beginning of the year, there has been a downward trend in asylum applications. In March, almost 10,000 fewer initial applications were recorded than in January.
