A widespread power outage paralyzed life throughout Spain and Portugal, and briefly in parts of France, leaving millions of people without electricity. Traffic lights went out, trains stopped, and long lines formed at ATMs and supermarkets as digital systems failed. The next morning, power supply was mostly restored, with the Spanish grid meeting demand and the Portuguese REN reactivating most substations. France also reported a return to normal operations. The exact cause is still unclear. Spanish and Portuguese authorities are investigating, with no indications of cyberattacks or a natural event. Portugal's REN denied rumors of atmospheric disturbances, while E-Redes only mentioned a problem in the European power grid. The power outage paralyzed hospitals, interrupted subway and train services, and disrupted communication. The outage was accompanied by high temperatures reaching up to 27 degrees Celsius, although authorities downplayed any connection to the weather. Some residents sought relief at the beach, while others walked for miles due to the halt in transportation. Authorities continue to work on identifying the cause and preventing future disruptions.
