The State Department has revoked more than 6,000 visas for international students, citing violations of US law and overstays. Officials stated that the "vast majority" of cases involved assault, DUI, burglary, and alleged "support for terrorism," without specifying how this category was defined. Around 4,000 visas were revoked for criminal violations, another 200 to 300 were revoked under INA 3B, a law defining terrorist activities as acts that endanger lives or violate US law. The tightening aligns with the overall efforts of the Trump administration to tighten immigration and scrutinize international students more closely. Earlier this year, the government requested applicants to make their social media accounts publicly accessible for enhanced scrutiny, with officials instructed to look for hostilities towards American citizens, institutions, or culture. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that possibly thousands more cases may be reviewed. Critics, including Democrats, argue that this measure undermines the principle of due process and unjustly targets students engaged in political activities. In the academic year 2023-24, over 1.1 million international students were enrolled in US universities.
