Miley Cyrus has revealed that she suffers from a Reinke's edema, a condition of her vocal cords that gives her voice a rough sound but complicates performance. "It's part of my unique anatomy," said the 32-year-old on Apple Music's "Zane Lowe Show," explaining that she has a "very large polyp" on her vocal cords. Cyrus said the polyp gives her voice "tone and texture," but singing with it feels like "running a marathon with weights on your ankles." The singer admitted that partying when she was younger didn't contribute to her vocal health, but also wasn't the cause of the condition. "My voice has always sounded like this," she added. When she's tired, her mother Tish says she sounds like she's "speaking through a radio." Cyrus described the condition as a "blessing" that makes her voice "super unique." She refuses to have the polyp surgically removed for fear of losing her distinctive sound. Instead, she limits her performances and notes that tours must be "sustainable" as she doesn't lip-sync and live shows are "taxing." "If I don't do a certain number of performances, it doesn't make sense mathematically," she said, referring to tour costs. Cyrus also spoke about other health issues, including an ovarian cyst that burst during a New Year's Eve performance, which she described as "quite traumatic."
