Prince Harry has reportedly considered changing his surname to Spencer in honor of his late mother, Princess Diana. According to The Mail on Sunday, he discussed the idea with his uncle, Earl Spencer, during a visit to the UK. Changing the name would require him to give up the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, which his children Archie and Lilibet also bear. Sources claim Earl Spencer advised Harry against this step due to significant legal hurdles. A friend described the conversation as 'friendly' but said Spencer cautioned him to be careful. The name Mountbatten-Windsor was adopted in 1960 for the descendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, combining the royal name Windsor with the surname adopted by Philip. A name change could further strain Harry's relationship with his family. His wife Meghan Markle recently referred to 'Sussex' as the surname of their family. In an episode of their Netflix series 'With Love, Meghan,' she corrected guest Mindy Kaling for using her maiden name and said, 'It just means so much to say: 'That's OUR family name'' The Sussexes began publicly using the royal names of their children after the baptism of Lilibet in 2023 in California. According to a spokesperson for the couple, the titles of their children 'are a birthright since their grandfather became monarch.' Archie and Lilibet are now listed on the royal family's website as Prince and Princess of Sussex and as sixth and seventh in line to the throne.
