A-ha lead singer Morten Harket has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a condition that could affect his future performance. The news was disclosed in a new interview on the A-ha website with biographer Jan Omdahl, after Harket had been silently struggling with the symptoms for years. Harket said it was not accepting the diagnosis, but his 'need for peace and quiet to work' that delayed the public announcement. To manage the symptoms, Harket started deep brain stimulation treatment (DBS) in June 2024, where electrodes are implanted deep into both sides of his brain. Omdahl stated that the results, combined with the therapy from NeuroClinic Norway, have led to a 'dramatic improvement' in Harket's physical condition. Parkinson's disease still affects Harket's voice, especially when he takes dopamine medications, which alleviate other symptoms but affect his voice control. 'The question is whether I can express myself with my voice,' Harket said. 'As things stand now, that's out of the question.' Despite the uncertainty, he urged his fans not to worry about him: 'Use your energy and effort on the real problems, and know that I am being taken care of.'
