Disney's Sci-Fi sequel "Tron: Ares" started with a disappointing $33.5 million from over 4,000 North American theaters, falling well short of expectations. The film's production costs amounted to $180 million. The soft opening is a worrying sign for the long-running but never mega-hit film series. Disney had hoped for a $50 million US debut. Internationally, the film only grossed $27 million, bringing the worldwide earnings to a disappointing $60 million. Although the audience gave the film a respectable 2+ on CinemaScore, it still couldn't match the $44 million debut of "Tron: Legacy" from 2010. Directed by "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Joachim Rønning. In "Tron: Ares," Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters are among the cast. It was overall a weak weekend at the box office: Even the new releases "Roofman" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" missed their targets. Paul Thomas Anderson's drama "One Battle After Another" earned $6.7 million in its third weekend, bringing it to $54.5 million in the US and $138 million worldwide - however, $300 million is needed to cover the costs. Dwayne Johnson's "The Smashing Machine" dropped by 70% in its second weekend, only achieving a $1.7 million increase. The $50 million film from A24 has only grossed $10.1 million so far.
