Keira Knightley is currently facing heavy criticism from fans after it was revealed that she is part of the new Harry Potter audiobook series – amidst an ongoing boycott of the franchise. The boycott began due to the behavior of author J.K. Rowling, who in recent years has repeatedly sparked outrage with transphobic statements. In an interview with Decider, Knightley, who voices Professor Umbridge in the audiobook series, explained that she was unaware of the boycott before accepting the role. "I wasn't aware of that, no. I'm very sorry," said Knightley, adding that she hopes for future "mutual respect for different opinions." Rowling's transphobic statements have long caused strong tensions within the Harry Potter fandom and also led to criticism from several original cast members. The author publicly criticized Daniel Radcliffe after he opposed her statements, and recently referred to Emma Watson as "ignorant" for stating that despite political differences, she still feels love and gratitude towards Rowling. Rowling said: "Like other people who have never experienced adult life without the protection of wealth and fame, Emma has so little life experience that she doesn't realize how ignorant she is."
