Sandro Wagner will end his role as assistant coach of the German national team after the UEFA Nations League Final Four in June. The 37-year-old is leaving the German Football Association (DFB) at his own request to take over a team as head coach in the future. This step is being taken in close coordination with national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, with whom Wagner has been working since September 2023. "I can understand Sandro's desire to become a head coach and respect his decision," Nagelsmann explained. Wagner has "enriched the team with his expertise and as a person," the head coach emphasized. Wagner previously worked as an assistant coach for the U20 national team and played one senior international match under interim coach Rudi Völler. Since the beginning of 2025, he has been participating in the DFB's Pro License course, which leads to the highest coaching qualification in German football. His desire to take on responsibility as a head coach has matured during this time. "Working as an assistant coach for the German national team has been and is a huge honor for me," said Wagner. The 2024 home European Championship was an unforgettable experience. However, he now wants to take the next step in his career: "It's no secret that it's my big wish to work as a head coach myself someday. Starting my coaching education in January has made that clearer to me. I have informed all parties involved about this in open and very good discussions. I am grateful for their understanding." DFB sports director Rudi Völler praised Wagner explicitly: "He also made a significant contribution to the inspiring performance of our team." We will see him again "soon as a head coach on the sidelines." Until his departure, Wagner remains part of the coaching staff with the ambition to bid farewell with a title win in the Nations League. In the semifinals, Germany will face Portugal on June 4 in Munich.
