Alfa Romeo Spider “Duetto” - Spider 1° Series

The unique design of the first model generation—commonly referred to in Germany today as the "round-tail" (*Rundheck*)—was not without its critics. To many purists, the rounded body shape, when compared to its predecessor (the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, also designed by Farina), appeared too feminine. Workers at the new Arese production plant dubbed it "Osso di Sepia." While this might sound like an Italian term of endearment, it translates to something far less flattering: "cuttlebone"—the very same calcium-rich plate often found as a decorative accessory in a parakeet’s cage. Ironically, the "Duetto," or "Osso di Sepia," is now the most sought-after—and consequently the most expensive—generation of the Alfa Romeo Spider among classic car enthusiasts.
