The second model generation features a completely different design, particularly at the rear. The vertically truncated tail—known outside of Italy primarily as a "fastback"—replaced the rounded shape of its predecessor. With nearly 50,000 units produced over a 13-year period, this series became the most successful one. Among the special editions was the "Niki Lauda Special Edition," introduced in 1978 specifically for the U.S. market. It served as a tribute to the Austrian Formula 1 world champion, who, at the time, was driving a Brabham equipped with an Alfa Romeo engine.
