Solar storms could increase heart attack risk in women

Did you know that solar eruptions can influence the human body in some way? Researchers from INPE (Brazilian National Institute for Space Research) compared data on hospital admissions due to heart attacks with data on solar instability. Solar storms occur during the 'solar maximum.' The sun emits charged particles that reach Earth and disrupt the magnetic field. These disturbances can affect satellites and GPS signals and even health according to the study. Between 1998 and 2005, 1,340 heart attack cases in São José dos Campos were analyzed. In men, heart attacks remained nearly constant regardless of solar instability. However, in women aged 31 to 60, the risk on days with magnetic disturbances can be three times higher. The study is observational and locally limited, so no definitive conclusions can be drawn. However, it shows an interesting connection between natural phenomena and our heart. A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery is blocked. Without oxygen, the heart muscle is damaged or dies. Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, and pressure in the chest.
