Foods That (Practically) Never Spoil

Not every food from the pantry has a short shelf life. With proper storage, some staple foods remain edible for years, making them extremely valuable in emergencies. The edibility of foods or beverages is most reliably assessed by watching for signs of spoilage. Look out for unusual smells, unpleasant tastes, or changes in consistency. According to FSIS, these signs – such as unpleasant smells, flavors, or texture changes – are caused by naturally occurring bacteria. If you notice any of these signs, do not consume the food. Fortunately, many staple foods are shelf-stable for years with proper storage. The key is storing them in a cool, dry, dark place, protected from heat and direct sunlight. For example, honey is virtually indefinitely shelf-stable. Even if it crystallizes over time, it remains completely edible and retains its full flavor. According to FSIS, low-acid canned foods – including meats, beans, peas, soups, vegetables, and tuna – remain edible for two to five years. Sugar also does not spoil when stored in a cool, dry pantry. However, experts recommend consuming it within two years for optimal quality. Finally, white rice, dried pasta, and dried beans (such as black beans, pinto beans, cannellini beans, and great northern beans) are shelf-stable for up to two years.
