These Common Medications Can Increase the Risk of Heat-Related Illnesses

As heatwaves become more frequent, people taking certain medications should be aware that they may have an increased risk of heat-related illnesses. For example, certain antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), can increase heat sensitivity. Studies have shown that these antidepressants can raise body temperature to up to 41 °C, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Beta-blockers, commonly prescribed for high blood pressure, can increase heat sensitivity by raising body temperature and intensifying the body's response to heat. Another group of medications commonly used to treat high blood pressure, ACE inhibitors (Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme Inhibitors), can also increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. ACE inhibitors not only impair the body's ability to regulate its temperature but can also suppress the natural thirst response, making dehydration more likely. Taking diuretics in hot weather can also be dangerous as they increase the body's water and salt excretion, leading to dehydration. GLP-1 medications can also increase the risk of heat-related illnesses by suppressing thirst, reducing fluid intake, and increasing the risk of dehydration.
